Children's SW - Youth Justice Team - Hertfordshire
We are seeking a qualified Children’s Social Worker to join a dedicated Youth Justice Team supporting children and young people who are involved with, or at risk of entering, the criminal justice system. This is an opportunity to make a meaningful difference by helping young people understand the impact of their actions, address underlying needs and build safer, more positive futures. You will manage a varied caseload and provide effective, child-centred social work that promotes welfare, reduces risk and supports rehabilitation.
Your responsibilities will include completing assessments, preparing plans and reports, undertaking direct work with children and families, and contributing to risk management and safeguarding processes. You will work closely with young people, parents and carers, schools, health services, police, probation, legal professionals and other partner agencies to coordinate effective interventions. The role may involve preparing information for court, attending meetings and hearings, contributing to statutory reviews, and ensuring that all decisions are proportionate, evidence-based and focused on the child’s best interests. You will maintain accurate case records and ensure work complies with relevant legislation, policies and professional standards.
Applicants must hold a recognised Social Work qualification and be registered with Social Work England, with current experience in children’s social care and a sound understanding of youth justice practice. You should be confident undertaking assessments, managing complex safeguarding concerns and engaging children who may be reluctant to work with professionals. Strong communication, report-writing, organisation and partnership-working skills are essential, along with the ability to work calmly under pressure and make sound professional judgments. Knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Children Act and youth justice frameworks, is highly desirable. A full driving licence and access to transport may be required for visiting families and attending appointments across the area. In return, you will join a supportive team committed to reflective practice, professional development and achieving positive outcomes for children and young people.
