We are seeking an experienced and qualified Social Worker to join a dedicated service as a Children’s Independent Reviewing Officer (IRO) in Swindon. In this important role, you will promote the rights, wishes and welfare of children and young people who are looked after, ensuring that their care plans are effective, timely and focused on achieving the best possible outcomes. You will work independently and constructively with children, families, carers, social workers and partner agencies.

Your responsibilities will include chairing statutory reviews for looked-after children, preparing effectively for meetings, and ensuring that children are supported to participate in decisions about their lives. You will monitor the progress of care plans, challenge drift and delay, and make sure that actions agreed at reviews are completed within appropriate timescales. Where necessary, you will escalate concerns and use professional judgement to identify when a child’s circumstances require further assessment, intervention or legal consideration. You will maintain accurate records, produce clear reports and contribute to quality assurance and service improvement activity.

Applicants must hold a recognised Social Work qualification and current professional registration, with substantial post-qualifying experience in children’s social care. Experience of working with looked-after children, child protection, permanence planning and statutory review processes is essential, along with a sound understanding of relevant legislation, guidance and safeguarding practice. You will need excellent communication, analytical and organisational skills, the confidence to challenge professionally, and the ability to build effective relationships while maintaining independence and objectivity. A commitment to anti-discriminatory practice, participation and improving outcomes for children is vital. This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference while working within a supportive, child-centred service.
