Key Responsibilities

  • Provide high-quality social work support to children looked after, ensuring their needs are met in line with statutory regulations and best practice.
  • Take a leading role in case management, supporting less experienced social workers and contributing to their development through mentoring and guidance.
  • Develop and implement care plans, ensuring the voice of the child is central to all decision-making processes.
  • Conduct risk assessments and intervene effectively in complex cases to ensure the safety and well-being of children.
  • Work closely with multi-agency professionals, including health, education, and legal services, to coordinate support for children in care.
  • Attend court proceedings as necessary, preparing reports and giving evidence when required.
  • Participate in team meetings, case reviews, and reflective supervision to maintain high standards of practice.
  • Keep accurate and up-to-date records in line with local authority policies and procedures.

Essential Criteria

  • Degree in Social Work (or equivalent) and Social Work England registration.
  • Significant post-qualification experience in children's social care, specifically within a Children Looked After team or similar setting.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Children Act 1989 and 2004, and an understanding of safeguarding and corporate parenting responsibilities.
  • Proven ability to manage complex cases and make sound professional judgments.
  • Experience of working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams to achieve positive outcomes.
  • Excellent assessment, communication, and report-writing skills.
  • Commitment to promoting the welfare and rights of children in care.
  • Willingness to travel within the local authority area as required.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in supervising or mentoring junior social workers.
  • Additional qualifications in therapeutic or systemic practice.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed approaches and working with children with complex needs.
