We are seeking an experienced and qualified social work professional to join a children’s services team as an Independent Reviewing and Safeguarding Officer. Based in Stoke-on-Trent, you will provide independent oversight of care planning and safeguarding arrangements, ensuring that children and young people receive the right support, protection and opportunities to achieve positive outcomes. This is a role for someone with sound professional judgement, strong communication skills and a clear commitment to improving children’s lives.

Your responsibilities will include chairing looked-after children reviews and other relevant meetings, ensuring that plans are purposeful, timely and focused on the child’s needs and wishes. You will make sure children are appropriately safeguarded, their views are heard and their rights are promoted throughout the care planning process. The role will involve scrutinising assessments, reviewing progress against agreed actions, identifying drift or delay, and challenging decisions where necessary. You will work closely with social workers, families, foster carers, residential providers, education, health professionals and other partner agencies to ensure effective multi-agency planning.

Applicants must hold a recognised social work qualification and current professional registration, with substantial post-qualification experience in children’s social care. Experience of working with looked-after children, child protection procedures, permanence planning and review processes is essential; previous experience as an IRO, conference chair or in a similar independent reviewing role would be advantageous. You should have a thorough understanding of relevant legislation, statutory guidance and safeguarding practice, alongside the ability to analyse complex information, produce high-quality reports and maintain accurate records. A confident, constructive and child-centred approach is vital, as is the ability to manage competing priorities and work independently. Enhanced safeguarding checks and satisfactory references will be required.
