We are seeking a qualified children’s social worker to join an Emergency Duty Team, providing effective support and safeguarding responses to children, young people and families outside standard office hours. This is a fast-paced role requiring sound professional judgement, resilience and the ability to make well-informed decisions in urgent and complex situations.
You will respond to referrals involving immediate concerns about children’s welfare, including safeguarding incidents, family breakdown, missing children, placement disruptions and requests for emergency accommodation or support. You will assess risk, undertake appropriate investigations, develop safety plans and take proportionate action to protect children and promote their wellbeing.
Working closely with colleagues, carers, health professionals, police and other partner agencies, you will share information appropriately, coordinate urgent interventions and ensure that all decisions are clearly recorded. You may be required to undertake emergency visits, contribute to strategy discussions, arrange suitable placements and provide clear handovers to daytime teams.
You must hold a recognised social work qualification and current registration with Social Work England. Experience of working with children and families, safeguarding procedures, statutory assessments and child protection processes is essential. The successful candidate will have a strong understanding of relevant legislation, guidance and professional standards, together with the confidence to work independently and manage competing priorities.
Excellent communication, analytical and report-writing skills are required, as is the ability to engage sensitively with children, parents and professionals during difficult circumstances. You will need to remain calm under pressure, demonstrate professional curiosity and maintain a child-centred approach at all times. Flexibility to work evenings, nights, weekends and public holidays is essential, along with the ability to travel when required.
This role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful difference at critical moments in children’s lives while working as part of a supportive, multi-disciplinary service committed to high-quality safeguarding practice.
